Hemp Milk

I've really taken to drinking dairy-free milk in the last year or so. I can handle dairy but it does make me bloated, especially drinking milk. Dairy causes an inflammatory response in everyone. Certain people are affected less than others but regardless I think it's important to try to cut it out when possible. Here's that balance theme again. I use nondairy milk in my coffee and cereal but eat some ice cream or good quality cheese. I say good quality because I think that matters too. I'm not talking about eating American cheese slices and Walmart brand ice cream. I try to stick to dairy products that have the cleanest ingredients. Just making these simple adjustments, I've been able to see a major difference in my stomach. Even when I do eat dairy I have very little to no issues. If you have discomfort when eating dairy, but don't want to give it up, try these adjustments. It might help!
The problem is, I've never found a premade nondairy milk that I love. They have weird additives or tastes and/or are very expensive. So, I started making my own nut milk. My favorite nut to use is the cashew. Cashews take less time to soak than almonds, have a nice flavor, and make super creamy milk. I also love using the pulp to make granola. While I will always love cashew milk, there's a new kid on the block. Hemp milk-No soaking, no straining, good flavor, nutrient dense! I'm sold!
Hemp seed benefits include, high in fiber, omega's, vitamin E, phos, mag, potassium, they're full of antioxidants, a complete protein, and anti-inflammatory. Per gram, hemp has more protein than soy, more omega's than flax, and more fiber than kale. It's good for brain and immune system function, skin, and can reduce cancer risk and heart disease. Now, with claims like these, I always like to point out that there is no magic pill. You're not going to drink hemp milk every morning and expect to turn into the picture of health. But, it can't hurt and it's never a bad idea to add nutrient-dense things like this to your diet.
So, if you're looking for a milk alternative, hemp milk would be a great milk to try!

Ingredients
(Makes enough for coffee and maybe one or two bowls of cereal for 5 days.)
Roughly 1/2 heaping cup hemp seeds (hemp hearts)
1 1/2-2 cup filtered water depending on how thick you want it.
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp maple syrup
A little dash of sea salt
Directions
Optional- Soak for about 30 mins (I know I said you don't have to soak but think it softens it up and allows it to be a little smoother.)
Blend all the ingredients together until smooth*
Store in the fridge for about 5 days. Separation is normal. Shake before use.
* Unless you strain it there will be some residue from the hemp hearts. It should sink to the bottom of drinks and you won't be able to tell when eating cereal. You shouldn't be bothered by it until the last sip or two of your coffee. I drink it but you can discard the last couple sips if it bothers you. If you want it perfectly smooth, strain it through a nut milk bag.
