Collagen Benefits

Around age 25 our bodies production of collagen slows every year and by the time we reach 40, we start losing more than we make! When most people think of collagen the first thing that comes to mind is healthy skin, hair, and nails which are one awesome benefits but, did you know collagen also aids in much more? Bone and joint health, healthy digestion, and increased athletic performance are just a few.
Digestion- Collagen heals the gut lining and aids in break down of protein and fat. If you ask any good Dr. where overall health starts and they will tell you it starts in the gut. If you're not digesting properly your body will not get the fuel it needs to perform at its ultimate capacity.
Joint and Bone Health- Collagen is packed with amino acids, glycine, and proline that repair tissue and lessen inflammation. Glycine also speeds up wound healing. Collagen peptides stimulate osteoblasts that help us build our bones.
Athletic Performance- It makes sense that athletic performance is increased when taking collagen because of the benefits that I've already stated. When your digestion is improved and your joints and bones are tip top your body has what it needs to perform at its best!
A few other benefits are better sleep, weight loss, and improved liver health plus, all those beauty benefits we start to lose as we age.
I've been using a scoop or two of collagen powder every day for over a month and I can tell a difference. My digestion is better, my skin is more vibrant and my hair is growing faster. I put a scoop in my morning coffee or matcha and in my smoothies. You can also bake with it, put it in water, or even in cocktails. Basically, it can be added to anything it will dissolve in.
All this being said, I would like to point out a few things. One, I am an RN, not a dietician. I can tell you what I do for myself based on my own research but, I cannot tell you what will work for you. Really nobody can. Do your own research and figure out what works for your body. Also, if you're on medications please consult with your Dr. before adding anything out of the ordinary to your health routine. I don't think there are any reactions with medications and collagen but you never know until you ask a professional. Lastly, there are no quick fixes or magic pills. Yes, you can take collagen to aid in your overall health but, please don't take this or any other supplement and expect all your health and beauty concerns to disappear. Overall wellness is a lifestyle. It involves eating right, exercise, and mental and emotional health. Any supplements you take should be added to a healthy lifestyle, not instead of a healthy lifestyle. Further Foods is the brand I use and can be purchased through their website - furtherfood.com.
